Advent of Europeans

1487 AD - Portuguese traveler Bartho Lomeu Dias reached Cape of Good Hope, South Africa and returned to Portugal.

In 1492 Columbus discovered America.

Finally, in 1498 Vasco De Gama was successful in finding the sea route to India. He reached India on May 17 with the help of Gujrati Trader Abdul Manik at Calicut, Kerala and was welcomed by King Zamorin.

In 1500 AD Pedro Albarej Cabral came to India.

In 1502, Vasco De Gama came India the second time.

In 1503, Vasco De Gama established the first Portuguese factory in Kerala at Cochin. Portuguese were the first to come to India and last to leave.

In 1505, De Almeida came to India. De Almeida was the first Portuguese Governor in India (1505 - 1509). He started the Blue Water policy and established Naval supremacy in the Arabian sea.

1509 AD - Albuquerque came to India. He was the second Portuguese governor in India (1509 - 1515). Albuquerque was the real founder of Portuguese power in India. He banned the Sati system in Goa.

 In 1524 Vasco De Gama came to India as Portuguese governor.

1529 AD - 1538 AD - Nino De Cunha came to India. He transferred Portuguese capital from Cochin to Goa in 1530. 
# In 1661 AD Portuguese princess Brigenza Katherine was married to British King Charles II. Portuguese gave Bombay as Dowry.

Remarks:-
1556 AD - Portuguese found the first printing press in India. They also started the cultivation of potato and tobacco in India. 
In 1739 Peshwa Bajirao first captured Salsette and Bessin area from Portuguese.


Vasco De Gama died in Cochin and Abuquerque died in Goa.

Reasons for the decline of Portuguese -
Dutch East India Company came to India and challenged the Naval supremacy of Portuguese East India Company.
