Medieval History Day 6 - The end of Mughal Dynasty and Veer Shivaji

Day 6

Jahangir (1605 - 1627 AD)

Real name - Saleem

Jahangir killed Guru Arjun Dev, the 5th guru of Sikhs.
- liked painting
- wrote Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri (autobiography)
- Nurjahan (Mehrunisa) was the wife of Jahangir
- Asmat Begum, the mother of Nurjahan, invented Perfume
- Nurjahan built the tomb of Jahangir in Lahore

Shahjahan (1627 - 1658 AD)

Childhood name - Khurram
1612 AD - married with Arjumand Bano Begum, Mumtaz Mahal
1631 AD - Mumtaz Mahal died when she was giving birth to Shahjahan's 14th child
1632 AD - Shahjahan built the Taj Mahal. It was completed in 1654 AD.
Designer - Ustad Ahmad Lahori
Mason/ Architecture - Isa Khan

- built Moti Masjid
- transferred capital from Agra to Delhi
- built Jama Masjid of Delhi
- built Red Fort in Delhi

Darasikoh, the son of Shahjahan, known as the lover of learning. He translated Upanishad in the Persian language - Shirra-i-Akbar.

Aurangzeb (1658 - 1707 AD)

Aurangzeb killed his 3 brothers and became king.

- banned all non-Islamic festivals in India
- killed the 9th guru of Sikhs, Guru Teg Bahadur
- started jizya Tax in 1679 AD
- built Moti Masjid of Delhi
- built Bibi ka Makbara in Aurangabad, Maharashtra
- the largest empire of the Mughal period
- maximum Hindu nobles in the court of Aurangzeb

Aurangzeb died in 1707 AD

Veer Shivaji

Shivaji was born in 1627 AD.
He took two taxes -
1. Chauth (1/4)
2. Sirdeshmukhi (1/10)

The minister council of Shivaji was called Ashtpradhan. Peshva was the PM.

Treaty of Purander - took place in 1665 between Jai Singh and Veer Shivaji

- took the title "Chatrapati" in 1674

Shivaji died in 1680 AD.
