Viceroy and Their work

1) Lord Canning (1856 to 1862 AD) 
Governor-General of India from 1856 to 1858 AD
Viceroy of India from 1858 to 1862 AD (first viceroy of India)

1861 Act - 3 high courts were founded - Kolkata, Bombay, and Madras

2) Lord Mayo (1869 to 1872 AD)
- first census (unsuccessful)
- killed by prisoners of Cellular jail

3) Lord Lytton (1876 to 1880 AD)
- first Delhi Darbar was held in the respect of Queen Victoria in 1877
- 'Kesar-i-hind' title was given to Queen Victoria
-1878 Arms Act passed
- Indian newspapers were banned in 1878 AD by the Vernacular Press Act

4) Lord Rippon (1880 to 1884 AD)
- ended Vernacular Press Act in 1881
- Factory Act was passed in 1881 (no child should work in factories)
- first successful census in 1881
- started local self-government

5) Lord Dufferin (1884 to 1888 AD)
- the foundation of Indian National Union by AO Hume 

28 December 1885
Place - Bombay (Gokul Das Tejpal Sanskrit College)
AO Hume founded the Indian National Union, 'Union' replaced with 'Congress' by Dada Bhai Naroji.

# Dada Bhai Naroji is also known as Grand Old Man of India. He gave the 'Drain of Wealth' theory.
