Day 11

Civil Disobedience Movement

Mahatma Gandhi started the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930. The concept was taken from the American scholar Henry David Thoreau.

Dandi March (12 March 1930 - 6 April 1930)
Mahatma Gandhi started Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram on 12 March 1930. He started the march of 240 miles with 78 members and completed it in 24 days. He reached Dandi on the 6th of April of 1930 and broke the Salt Act, also known as Salt Satyagraha. 

Round Table Conferences

First round table conference - 1930
Second round table conference - 1931
Third round table conference - 1932

Gandhi-Irwin Pact (1931)
Irwin was the Viceroy of India at that India. After this pact, Mahatma Gandhi went to Britain with Sarojini Naidu in the S.S. Rajputana ship and participated in the 2nd Round Table Conference.

Churchill - 'Half Nude Fakir'

# Dr. Bheem Rao Ambedkar, the founder of A.I.S.C.F. (All India Schedule Caste Federation), participated in all the three round table conferences.

1932 AD
British PM Ramsey McDonald gave Communal Award (separate elections for SC) to B.R. Ambedkar.

Poona Pact, 26 September 1932
Mahatma Gandhi started Hunger Strike on 20 September in jail at Pune in Maharashtra against the Communal Award. On 26 September, Dr. Ambedkar met Mahatma Gandhi in jail and signed Poona Pact.

Government of India Act, 1935

  • Province autonomy established
  • gave the concept of All India Federation
  • Viceroy title changed to Governor General again
  • Governor- General - Wellington
1937
First-time elections were held in India. Congress won in 7 states while the Muslim League won in 2 states - Punjab and Bengal.

1938, Haripur Session of Congress
President - Subhash Chandra Bose

1939, Tripura Session of Congress (Madhya Pradesh)
Mahatma Gandhi put forward the candidature of Pattabhi Sitaramayya for the President post in Congress. Pattabhi Sitaramayya fought against Subhash Chandra Bose and lost in the election. Gandhi declared that Sitarammya's defeat was "more mine than his" and started movement against the defeat of his candidate. So, Bose resigned from both President and Congress. Dr. Rajendra Praasad became the President of Congress.
